The jumps season is now on the horizon as Lewis Jones takes a quick peek at the Champion Chase.
This is many people’s highlight of the entire week and it’s easy to see why. The best speedsters in National Hunt racing take on the test that is the Cheltenham Festival. This race has produced some amazing sporting moments over the years. Will this year’s renewal do the same…
He’s decided to look ahead to the big races at the greatest show on turf with the Champion Chase coming under his watchful eye here. Guess what? A Willie Mullins horse is all the rage.
Who would have thought it?
There’s really only one place to start when it comes the 2017 Champion Chase. His name? Douvan
Who won the Champion Chase in 2016?
One of the greatest horse races I’ve ever seen – without doubt, where Sprinter Sacre bounced back to his best leaving no eye dry in the house.
It was intriguing Champion Chase, featuring last year´s brilliant Arkle hero up against the last three winners of this event, all of whom had a certain amount to prove.
Sprinter Sacre moved smoothly to the front on the home turn and was soon in a commanding lead.
This was an astonishing display by the brilliant 2013 winner, whose career has stuttered due to a heart problem and for whom retirement has been mooted more than once. For him to get back to this level at the age of ten is a tribute to the skill of his trainer. He was retired in late 2016 and will go down as one of the all-time greats of the game. A monster of a horse.
How to find the winner of the Champion Chase?
Look no further than last year’s Arkle winner. The last 16 Arkle winners to run in the Champion Chase have all placed at worst with nine winning. That adds further fuel to the fire in the case for Douvan to rule all in this race.
He was a very easy winner of the Arkle last season and looks ready made to rule all in open company.
Willie Mullins’ charge could win three of four of these if he stays fit and well. He’s a machine.
Ante-post Champion Chase tip?
Easy. Just load up the wheelbarrow on Douvan. He’s worth it.
